In a word, YES!
Automobile engines and motorcycle engines are very different and demand different qualities from oil. Motorcycles require more detergent and anti-foaming agents, among other things.
The Savage only takes 2 quarts of oil so you might save a couple of dollars by using "Brand X" but you may do hundreds of dollars worth of damage in the process.
Change the filter and oil frequently. Use motorcycle oil. Check your the parts stores in your area, lots of them carry motorcycle oil and it's usually cheaper than the dealer.
